American InterContinental University (AIU)

AIU offers an online master’s degree program in education for middle and high school teachers. The emphasis is on incorporating technology into education. Courses include learning theory, instructional design, curriculum design, research methodology, and instructional technology.

Capella University

The School of Education at Capella University offers master’s and doctoral programs with various specializations for middle and high school teachers. There is frequent inclusion of education technology.

Columbia Interactive

Columbia University

Science education courses and seminars for credit and non-credit are offered for middle and high school teachers. Recently, programs in materials science, electrical engineering, and others were available, as were e-seminars in cosmology and brain anatomy. Courses offered are synchronous and asynchronous, and some are a combination of on-site and online.

Courses for Science Teachers, Grades 7–12

Center for Science, Math and Technology, Colorado State University

The Center for Science, Math and Technology at Colorado State University offers courses for science teachers in grades 7–12. The current course, “Chemistry: The molecular explanation, with a focus on water,” provides a forum for online discussion about both the teaching of chemistry and the science of chemistry in secondary classrooms. Colorado State University is currently developing courses for teachers of biology and physics.

Drexel ELearning

Drexel University

Drexel e-Learning offers master’s degree programs in the science of instruction “designed for high school mathematics, science, or technology teachers, or individuals already possessing a degree in mathematics, science or engineering who have chosen teaching as a subsequent career.” The courses are scheduled and are a mix of synchronous and asynchronous formats.

MJM Associates and Loyola-Marymount University

The science courses offered here are not specific to grade level. They include traditional independent-study courses and online courses. The courses have a limited time for completion. The professional development credit courses are available from Loyola-Marymount University of Los Angeles.

Independent Professional Studies

Fresno Pacific University

Independent Professional Studies at Fresno Pacific University offers courses for graduate credit or professional development units for middle and high school teachers. Courses are to be completed within one year.

Master of Education

Jones International University

Courses available here are for middle and high school teachers and follow a weekly schedule. Included among the programs is a master of education in secondary curriculum, assessment, and instruction. There is a mix of synchronous and asynchronous formats.

MSU Virtual University

Michigan State University

The graduate program in education from MSU permits a concentration in science or mathematics for middle or high school. The science courses are largely in physics. Courses offered are fully online and often can be applied to a master of arts in education.

National Teachers Enhancement Network (NTEN)

Montana State University and NSTA

Courses offered to K–8 teachers support teaching about botany, insects, electricity, motion, ecology, nutrition, soil science, and space science. They are taught in sections of 25 students or fewer. Courses are delivered online from Montana State University-Bozeman using conferencing software. Graduate credits are available from MSU-Bozeman. An NSF grant pays tuition of teachers who participate in course launches.

Online Learning.net

UCLA, University of San Diego, and Andrews University

UCLA Online Learning.net offers courses and programs that focus on teaching for middle and high school teachers. Science courses have been offered, including one that focused on instructional technology applications. Arrangements for graduate credits or professional development credits are available for some courses.

Online Physics for Elementary and Middle-School Teachers

University of Kentucky

The University of Kentucky offers courses on light, temperature & heat; electricity & magnetism; and force, motion, & energy for graduate credit or professional development. The courses emphasize hands-on activities you can use in your classroom.

Online Studies

University of Maryland

The University of Maryland offers master’s degree programs or graduate courses online. A master of life science is offered with concentrations in biology or chemistry. In some cases, there are on-site lab requirements. Some courses in that program may be taken individually.

Professional Development Courses

University of Wisconsin at Madison

The University of Wisconsin at Madison offers several online and field courses that are designed as professional development for science teachers. These include “Rainforests and Coral Reefs”, "Field Methods for Ecological Research"  and “Trees of the Midwest”.

Physics Education at the University of Virginia

The University of Virginia Physics Department offers graduate-level courses for middle and high school educators. Some physics courses are offered online and others are offered as a mix of formats.

School of Education, Indiana College Network (ICN)

Indiana University

Courses from Indiana University are available through interactive videoconferencing, cable TV or public television, videotape, Internet, and independent study. Offered are graduate credit courses and continuing education courses for middle and high school teachers. Graduate programs are available in education.

Science in Education

TERC and Lesley University

This online science education master's degree program for elementary and middle school educators addresses inquiry-based science pedagogy and Web-based information technologies in daily practice. The 33-credit-hour program comprises an introductory 3-credit-hour course called “Try Science” and five 6-credit-hour modules. Each module focuses on a particular science domain. Online science courses for K–8 teachers, curriculum specialists, and instructional resource persons are also available. Each course is team taught by a scientist and an educator.

Stanford Center for Professional Development Online Classroom

Stanford University

These upper-level online science courses and seminars for middle and high school educators emphasize technology and engineering. The asynchronous courses are offered through streaming text, audio, and graphics, with access to instructors through chat and newsgroup technologies.

Teaching Evolution: Online Course for Teachers

California State University Fullerton, PBS

This course, developed to accompany the PBS television series “Evolution,” helps science teachers to examine major evolutionary concepts, explore teaching methodologies, and address obstacles to teaching evolution. In addition to reading assignments, participants complete eight interactive online sessions that cover content and strategies for dealing with controversy. California State University Fullerton has expanded the basic PBS course to include more rigorous content, and the course is offered for graduate credit.
