Quinsigamond Community College in Worcester, Mass., has contracted with CSE to conduct the preliminary research for and the evaluation of its new Massachusetts Technician Education Collaboration (Mass-TEC). Mass-TEC, a three-year project funded by the National Science Foundation’s Advanced Technological Education program, intends to increase the number of skilled technicians in central Massachusetts to support regional employers’ high-end engineering and manufacturing operations. Using a range of industry- and community-based public awareness efforts, Mass-TEC will reach out to Spanish, Vietnamese, and English-speaking families, high school teachers, and career advisors in order to change their perceptions regarding these jobs, and their willingness and ability to inform young people and adults of the opportunities that exist in the region and how best to take advantage of them. The initial research will inform the design and implementation of the targeted public awareness campaign; in the subsequent years of the project, the evaluation will assess the impact of the project’s public awareness campaign on these three groups.
