Research Projects
Through past and current projects, CSE researchers have investigated a variety of science education areas:
Impact of instruction
- Determining the impact of inquiry-based science instruction on student outcomes by reviewing research from 1984 to 2002.
- Exploring the relationship between variation in curriculum implementation and student learning.
Large-scale reform
- Determining factors that inhibit and support sustaining elementary science education programs.
- Exploring institutional capacities and barriers to sustaining changes and partnerships that have been made as a result of participation in a partnership initiative to improve science teaching and learning in Boston's middle schools and high schools, to enhance university-level teaching by STEM faculty, and to ensure the university partners' continued support for and faculty involvement in science education.
- Understanding rural districts’ access to and engagement in science education improvement efforts.
Teacher professional development
- Evaluating models for teacher professional development to improve science-specific accommodations for students with learning disabilities.
Teacher workforce
- Developing a model of the cost of teacher turnover and an understanding of district and school policies and practices that enable Boston Public Schools to successfully retain their science and math workforce.
- Identifying factors influencing the retention of the science teacher workforce in the Northeast of the United States.
